James Connolly – Ballyfermot
The James Connolly Cumann was formed in 1992 under the stewardship of Aisling Ní Dhálaigh, Críona Ní Dhálaigh, Tony Smithers, Ian McBride and Aengus Ó Snodaigh, with Aengus as Chairperson.
The cumann was central in the historic election of Aengus Ó Snodaigh in 2002. Today the current chairperson is Michael Donohoe. Our cumann is very much involved in the Ballyfermot, Cherry Orchard, Bluebell and Chapelizod communities.
We have been involved in various campaigns such as:
- The Anti-Bin Tax Campaign.
- The Housing Crisis
- The drugs epidemic
- Umemployment
- Moneylending
- Civil and local rights
The James Connolly Cumann is keen to welcome new members from the surrounding area.
JAMES CONNOLLY
James Connolly was the Commander General of the 1916 Easter Rising.
Connolly was born to immigrant parents in Edinburgh, Scotland. He later joined the British Army. He was sent to Ireland and became interested in Socialism and Irish Nationalism. On return to Scotland Connolly befriended the socialist and marxist John Lesley.
In 1896, he founded the Irish Socialist Republican Party and founded its newspaper The Workers Republic. Later he toured America highlighting Ireland's quest for freedom.
Upon returning to Ireland, Connolly accepted the post of Chief Organiser of the Belfast Branch of Jim Larkin's ITGWU and launched a new newspaper called the Irish Worker.
Connolly was instrumental in founding the Irish Citizens Army and played a significant role during the Dublin Lockout.
Connolly was a signatory to the Irish Proclaimation and was executed by the British in Kilmainham Gaol.
