Sinn Féin Dublin South Central Sinn Féin Representative and TD

Aengus Ó Snodaigh is TD for Dublin South Central following the General Election of 2002. He is the Party Whip in Leinster House and is the Party Spokesperson on Justice, Equality, Human Rights, Law Reform and International Affairs. He is a member of the Oireachtas European Affairs Committee and of the Committee on Procedures and Privileges. He is the party's representative to the National Forum on Europe, is a member of the Sinn Féin Ard Chomhairle and is part of the party's negotiations team.
 

 
In 1983 Aengus joined Sinn Féin when he was a student in UCD and has since been involved at all levels within the party. He was chairperson and finance officer of Dublin Sinn Féin; sub-editor of An Phoblacht newspaper; director of elections; involved in the Peace Process negotiations in Weston Park and was Sinn Féin’s National Spokesperson against the Nice Treaty.
 
While at UCD he was awarded a BA for History and Geography; and a Higher Diploma in Education. As a qualified teacher, he taught Literacy in the North Inner City. He has also played Rugby and Gaelic football at club level.
 
Aengus is a fluent Gaelic speaker and has worked as a Services Officer with Bord na Gaeilge; Bar Manager of Club Chonradh na Gaeilge; and has been Sinn Féin’s 26-Counties Cultural Officer. He has also been involved in cultural and historical pursuits where is a member of the Irish Institute of Cultural & Historical Studies; was co-editor of the Ireland Institute Journal The Republic; PRO for the Comóradh 98 Átha Cliath – 1798 Rising Commemoration Committee; spokesperson for Emmet 200 – the Robert Emmet Commemoration Committee; and is author of several historical articles and pamphlets including as Forgotten Ten (Kevin Barry and his nine comrades hanged in Mountjoy Gaol), Rotunda and Lord Edward Fitzgerald, and edited Fuil, feall agus fealsúntacht sraith altanna ar 1798..
 
Aengus is a seasoned campaigner and before being elected was involved in numerous political, environmental, cultural and historical campaigns such as Save Wood Quay; Croppies Acre; Restore Pearse Family Home; Save Sandymount Strand; Civic Pride; prisoner’s rights campaigns such as Smash H-Blocks, Stop Strip-Searching, etc. He has also campaigned for human rights, Irish language rights, against repressive legislation such as extradition, the Criminal Justice Act, as well as for Free Speech and against the censorship of Section 31.
 
Aengus is a member of Ballyfermot’s Decies Road Local Agenda 21; member of the Ballyfermot Drugs Task Force.
 
Aengus has also contested numerous elections such as the 1992 Local Elections (for the Pembroke Ward); the 1987 General Election; the 1999 By-Election for Dublin South Central and the General Election of 2002 where he won the seat for Sinn Féin.
 
As Aengus promised before he was elected, he only draws the average wage. The surplus of his Leinster House income is used to fund a full-time constituency advice service and to keep constituent’s informed of local and national developments, through the regular publication of Dublin News and other local newsletters.
